About a month ago I bought a Taste of Home cookbook entirely full of just cookie recipes. I had bought it in preparation of Christmas cookies but there are so many awesome recipes in there that I just couldn’t wait.
Ever since I met my husband 13 years ago he’s always raved about his aunt’s soft molasses cookies. So over the years I’ve been trying new recipes that just might compare to his aunt’s recipe.
This one has done the trick! These cookies are amazing, they are so soft with just enough spice. This molasses cookie recipe is a keeper. We both got hooked on these quickly. I’m already planning on making them again for Christmas. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 & 1/4 cups sugar, divided
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 & 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- In a large bowl, cream shortening and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg, molasses, milk and vanilla.
- Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Roll into 1 & 1/4 inch balls; roll into remaining sugar. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets.
- Bake at 350° for 10-14 minutes or until tops crack and edges are slightly firm.

Congrats on succeeding with finding a cookie that your husband agrees is equivalent (or better) than one he grew up with. I’ve all but given up with my mother in law’s cookie recipe that my husbands swears isn’t the same recipe his mom makes. 🙂

I’m with your husband. I adore soft, molasses cookies. Don’t you just love A Taste of Home? I rarely find a recipe in their books that I don’t like. Love your pictures, by the way!
