My first attempt at homemade spaghetti sauce was so successful that it gave me the courage to try another tomato sauce recipe. I liked my first pasta sauce recipe but it was a little to chunky for my husband’s liking.
This simple homemade tomato sauce recipe has about half of the ingredients and is actually tastier. After cooking the sauce for an hour, process it in a food processor to achieve a smooth texture.
I love this tomato sauce recipe, it was easy and fast to make. Not only can you use the homemade sauce on spaghetti and pasta dishes but it also works fabulous on homemade pizza!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes, with basil
- 2 dried bay leaves
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, optional
Directions:
- In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, saute until translucent.
- Add crushed tomatoes and bay leaves. Season with salt and pepper then simmer covered on low heat for 1 hour or until thick.
- Remove bay leaves, add unsalted butter, 1 tablespoon at a time to round out the flavors.
- Divided in a few batches, process tomato sauce in a food processor until smooth. Cool completely before packaging for storage in freezer.

Thanks Cat. It was very easy to make and so much better than jarred sauce. It’s a definite keeper!
