Maybelline Master Prime added a new Long Lasting Eyeshadow Base ($7.99) to their line. There are 3 different versions to choose from: Prime & Smooth, Prime & Matte and Prime & Illuminate.
I was surprised to see that two of the three, smooth and illuminate, contained shimmer. I’m not really into eye primers with shimmer but the matte version looked a little dark for my fair skin.
So to be safe I went with the lightest one, Prime & Smooth. It’s more of a light champagne color with a very subtle shimmer.
I like the square plastic packaging with doe foot applicator. It comes with a generous amount of product, 0.23 fluid ounce.
A little goes a very long way with this eye primer. Two small dots on each eyelid is enough coverage for me once blended out.
When I first saw the product on the wand, it looked nice and thick. However, it blends out to give extremely sheer coverage.
If you are looking for an eyeshadow primer that does good at concealing discoloration or veining, this Prime & Smooth may not give you the coverage you seek.
It has a nice creamy consistency that blends out easily. Once blended, it sets pretty quickly.
I have very oily eyelids so not many eye primers make my eyeshadow last all day long. This Master Prime one helps my shadow stay on longer than if I don’t use a primer, but not as long as when I use my best primers.
On average, I still get creasing with this one after about the 4 hour mark. I notice that it seems to do better at keeping matte shadows in place much better than shimmer shadows.
By the end of the day, shimmery eyeshadows will be all but gone completely while the matte shadows will still be in place but faded.
Unfortunately my quest for an inexpensive eyeshadow primer, that works all day on my oily eyelids, continues. This Maybelline Master Prime shadow base just isn’t for me.
