Maybelline Dream Cushion Fresh Face Liquid Foundation On-The-Go ($15.99) is a cushion compact foundation offered in a range of 8 shades. I purchased Classic Ivory to test out for myself.
What is a cushion compact? It’s a compact that opens to reveal an actual sponge cushion that is saturated with liquid foundation.
The cushion portion is actually protected by an interior closure that snaps tight to keep the foundation from drying out. Maybelline’s version has a mirror in the lid and includes an application sponge.
Over the past week I’ve tried applying this foundation with several different tools. I got the best coverage overall with a foundation brush.
For me, Dream Cushion is light to light-medium coverage. It is a bit buildable but redness and certain spots still show through not matter how much I try to build it up.
Luckily this foundation has a luminous finish so it doesn’t get cakey when you apply a few layers on your skin. I set mine with powder and am left with a very natural looking finish to my skin.
I’m usually always an Ivory in drugstore foundations but this one runs a bit dark for me. And unfortunately it does seem to oxidize on me a bit, as it sets up on my skin.
Maybelline Dream Cushion is not the best choice for those with oily skin like myself. It breaks down pretty easily after about the 4 hour mark, even with a primer and a setting spray.
I can’t be certain but this foundation may be causing me to break out as well. My skin is usually pretty clear but I’ve had several breakouts this week since I’ve been wearing it every day.
For me and my oily skin, this Maybelline Dream Cushion is a fail. I like the ease of application and the natural glowy finish it gives my skin. Unfortunately it doesn’t last all day for me and it oxidizes to look a bit orange as well.
Oh and I didn’t even mention the hefty price tag. You only get 0.51 oz in the compact and I paid almost $16! I think that is way too much for a drugstore foundation.
