Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee ($22) is an interesting new concept in blush. Made with water, coconut fruit juices and argan oil that is supposed to hydrate and give your cheeks natural looking color for 14 hours. It comes in 6 shades and I bought Pink Escape to try first. Let’s take a look at how this does on my oily skin.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the screw top container was that it looks like a gel. It has a glossy finish to it and looks like jello in the container. I couldn’t detect any scent and was a bit disappointed by that. I was hoping it smelled a bit like coconuts at least. Pink Escape is a vibrant dark pink, almost red, in the jar.
The texture of this blush not only looks like jello but it feels like jello too. It has a very wet feel to it and is squishy like jello too. Since it’s so wet, it applies quite thin. One swipe gives a light layer of tinted color but it’s easily built up with several layers for more pigmentation. This definitely reminds me of liquid cheek stains like those from Benefit, thin and sheer but buildable.
The finish of these starts off wet but does dry down to a semi-matte finish. The look of this color is pretty natural looking. It’s not as bold as it is in the container, it gives my fair skin just a hint of light pink color with 2 – 3 layers blended out. Be aware that it does easily stain fingertips with application so you may want to use a small stipple brush instead.
As I mentioned at the beginning, I do have oily skin especially this time of year. This cheek gelee surprisingly lasts me at least 10 hours without fading. I love that it feels nice and light on the skin and not greasy or slimey. It defenitely reminds me on a cheek stain and not just a cream/liquid blush.
The only concern I have with this product is how it will react to travel in warmer months. To me it seems like something that would not do well in warmer temps. I wonder if it would melt or get runny at all? Just a thought I had.
Overall I’m pretty impressed by this Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee. Usually cream blushers do not last long on my oily skin but this one does well. It’s an interesting product, will you check it out the next time you’re at Sephora? There’s a tangerine orange one, Coral Oasis, that I’m eyeing up next!
Available online at Sephora.

Hi Michelle. I should have mentioned that I did try that. I was hoping I could use it as a lip stain too but it tastes terrible!
