You may have already seen the new Covergirl Summer promos all over the place featuring Katy Perry. There are two new foundations in the line, one liquid and one powder. Last week I reviewed the Ready, Set Gorgeous Liquid Foundation so today we’ll take a look at the Ready, Set Gorgeous Fresh Complexion Oil Free Powder Foundation ($8.99).
There are 6 shade options to choose from for this powder. I bought the lightest one which is Fair, #105 – 110. I mentioned in the liquid foundation review that I thought it ran a touch light but the powder doesn’t seem to. This shade works perfectly for my light skin but it may be too dark for anyone really pale.
Don’t let the small section of powder fool you either. It looks like a small amount but it’s actually a lot more product than you may think. This Covergirl powder contains 10.5 g (0.37 oz) compared to a MAC Mineralize Skinfinish which contains 10 g (0.35 oz).
I didn’t have high expectations for this as a stand alone foundation when I bought it. I just figured it would be used to set the liquid foundation. I honestly thought I’d test it, see that it was just like other drugstore powders and then return it for being “nothing special”.
Since it’s being marketed as a powder foundation I started my testing by using it as that. I applied my normal primer and then used my Sigma flat top kabuki brush to apply it. I first start by pressing the powder foundation onto my skin, in areas that need the most coverage, with the brush.
I then follow that by buffing the powder onto the rest of the areas and blend it really well. I was instantly quite impressed by the amount of coverage this gives my skin. It covers redness really well and evens out my skin nicely.
The included sponge works pretty good as well. It’s best for those areas that need extra coverage. You just press the powder into the skin with the sponge the same way I do with the brush. I just personally think the brush is easier to work with and to clean.
The powder has a really fine, silky smooth texture so it goes on nicely. I love the finish it has as well. It doesn’t give my skin that dry powdery look at all. It actually has a very natural semi-luminous finish to it that gives your skin a nice subtle glow.
I’ve also worn this plenty of times over the liquid foundation as well. You definitely don’t need a lot to set the liquid, just a light dusting does the job and gives added some coverage.
I’m quite pleased with the wear of this powder foundation as well. The coverage remains after 8 hours of wear with just minimal break down on my nose which gets oily, normally around the 4 hour mark. I find the wear time to be about the same when worn alone and with the liquid foundation.
From the first use it immediately reminded me of the Tarte Amazonian Clay Airbrush Powder Foundation. It gives my skin the almost identical amount of coverage, the same finish and staying power at a fraction of the cost.
Overall I’m totally happy with using this as a powder foundation alone. So far this has come in really handy for everyday wear when it’s hot and humid and I don’t want to apply a heavy liquid foundation. Just a few quick seconds and I’ve evened out my skin for the entire day.
Have you tried the Covergirl Ready, Set Gorgeous Powder Foundation yet? Do you like to wear it alone or over liquid foundation?
