With it’s deep red coloring, it’s hard to not notice a nice Red Velvet Cake. But have you ever heard of a Chocolate Velvet Cake? Me neither! So when I found this cake recipe on the Southern Plate recipe blog, I saved it to make at a later date. I made this chocolate cake recipe over the Christmas holidays and I’m just now getting around to posting it.
The basis of this recipe starts with a standard chocolate cake mix with just a few added ingredients. It’s quick and super easy to make.
The cake and icing recipe calls for adding a liquid butter flavoring instead of vanilla. I wasn’t sure about this since I’ve never heard of it before. But I did find it at Wal-Mart like mentioned in the Southern Plate post.
I have to say that when I added it to the icing part of this cake recipe, I really didn’t like it. I could taste the artificial butter flavoring and it kinda tasted fake to me and not like real butter. It wasn’t that drastic but I won’t use it in the icing next time. I’d rather just stick to good old vanilla.
Other than the butter flavoring, I highly recommend this Chocolate Velvet Cake recipe. I made the cake in a 13×9 baking dish instead of two rounds also. The cake turned out so moist and the frosting is delicious.

I like the idea of a chocolate velvet cake instead of red velvet. All that red food coloring kind of freaks me out. : )
